The Feynman technique when you have no one to explain to
The advice is everywhere and it is good advice: if you want to know whether you understand something, explain it in plain language to someone who does not. Wherever you go vague, wherever you reach for a term you cannot unpack, that is the part you do not have.
There is a step in that instruction most people skip past, and it is the one doing all the work.
Someone who does not.
Most of us are studying alone. There is no patient beginner sitting across the table at eleven at night, and the version of the technique that survives contact with a real life is the solo one: explain it to the wall, the whiteboard, the empty room. That version still helps. It is also missing the mechanism that made the original work, and it fails in a specific way that is worth understanding before you conclude the technique does not work for you.
First, a small correction about the name
Richard Feynman did not write the Feynman technique. He was an extraordinary explainer and he clearly worked this way, but he never published a study method or named a set of steps. The four-step formulation that circulates today was assembled later by people describing how he seemed to learn.
This matters more than trivia. Because nobody formalised it, what circulates is a compressed folk version, and compression is where the important part got lost. The step that reads as a stylistic flourish, explain it to someone, is not decoration. It is the measuring instrument.
Why explaining works, precisely
In 2002 two Yale researchers, Leonid Rozenblit and Frank Keil, ran a study that is the cleanest demonstration of this you will find.
They asked people to rate, on a seven point scale, how well they understood everyday things. A zipper. A flush toilet. A cylinder lock. People rated themselves fairly confident. Then the researchers asked them to write a detailed, step-by-step explanation of how the thing actually works. Then they asked them to re-rate their understanding.
Confidence dropped, reliably, across every version of the experiment they ran.
They called it the illusion of explanatory depth: people believe they understand complex things with far more precision and coherence than they actually do, and the belief survives right up until the moment they have to produce the explanation.
That is the whole engine of the Feynman technique. Not the plain language, not the imaginary child. The technique works because producing an explanation is a test you cannot pass by feeling prepared.
There is a second finding in that paper worth carrying with you, because it tells you when to bother. The researchers ran the same rate-explain-re-rate procedure across different kinds of knowledge, and the illusion did not merely weaken outside explanatory knowledge. It mostly vanished. Asked about facts, people were overconfident but much less so. Asked about procedures and about narratives, their ratings did not drop at all. You do not badly overestimate your knowledge of a date, or of how to do something you have done. You badly overestimate your understanding of a mechanism.
So this technique is for concepts, systems, arguments, processes. For vocabulary and formulas, use something else. That boundary is real and most articles recommending the technique do not draw it.
What the solo version loses
Now the problem.
The illusion collapses when your explanation meets something that can tell the difference between a real account and a fluent one. In Rozenblit and Keil's studies that something was the demand to produce a complete written mechanism, step by step, with nowhere to hide.
Talking to your wall is not that.
Speaking is fluent by nature. You can produce ten confident minutes about a chapter and skip three concepts entirely, and the skipping will not feel like anything. There is no error signal. Nothing happens at the moment you should have said something and did not. The wall does not interrupt, the cat does not ask a follow-up question, and the whiteboard does not know what was in the chapter.
This is not hypothetical. In study communities you find people who invented this workaround independently and describe it in almost identical terms. One explains each chapter to his wall, his cat, once to an empty bag of chips. Another stands at a whiteboard teaching an invisible class and argues with himself. A third records himself explaining and plays it back to argue with the recording. They all report it works better than re-reading, and several of them mention feeling slightly ridiculous doing it.
And one of them describes exactly why he stopped. He had been recording himself teaching an imaginary audience. It was useful. But he had no way to know what he had covered, so he went back to flashcards.
That is the failure mode, stated by someone living it. The solo Feynman technique does not fail because it is wrong. It fails because you are grading your own exam, using the same knowledge the exam is testing.
Four ways to put the missing half back
In rough order of how well they work and how hard they are to arrange.
A person who knows the subject
The original, and still the best. This is why study groups work when they work. It is also the least available, because it needs someone else's time and enough of their expertise to catch a gap.
Write it instead of saying it
Writing is slower and less forgiving. The vague noun you can slide past in speech sits there on the page looking vague. This is closer to what Rozenblit and Keil actually tested, and it is the reason some people insist the written version is the real one. The cost is that it is much slower, which is why people stop.
Explain, then audit against the source
After explaining from memory, open the material and go looking specifically for what you did not mention. Not a re-read, a comparison. This works and almost nobody does it, which is precisely why the technique quietly fails for so many people.
Explain to something that has read the material
A general chatbot is a poor version of this: it will discuss your topic in the abstract, drift away from the specific document you are responsible for, and occasionally invent a detail. What you need is bound to your actual source, and able to tell you what you left out.

What I built
Disclosure: I am one person and this is the tool I made for myself, so read this as description rather than a pitch.
It is called Voice Tutor. You upload a document or paste a link, and then you have an actual conversation about it out loud. You explain things back, it asks you questions, you ask it questions. Before you start it extracts the document's claims, and while you talk it tracks which of them you have actually covered. At the end you get a recap: what you got through, what you skipped, what to go back to.
It is the Feynman technique with the missing half put back. Not a person, and not as good as one. But unlike the wall, it has read the material, and it will tell you what you did not say.
No flashcards, no quizzes, no summaries. The effort stays with you on purpose. Because it is a conversation rather than a screen, you can do it while walking, which is most of why I still use it.
It is free and early. I am looking for people who will try it on something they are genuinely studying and tell me where it falls down.
